According to department of Crops, surveillance operations have been underway since the locusts were initially detected. The District Agriculture Office has confirmed that technical teams are closely monitoring the situation to assess the scale of the invasion and its potential threat to crops and grazing fields.

District Agriculture Coordinator Mr. Simon Masenga, says the ministry is collaborating with relevant stakeholders, to contain the spread of the pests.

He further advised farmers to remain calm but vigilant and to report any further sightings to their nearest agricultural camp officer.

The arrival of the locusts has raised fears of possible damage to vegetation and pasture, particularly at a time when farmers are preparing for the 2025/2026 farming season.

Meanwhile, the ministry has assured the public that a comprehensive response plan is being developed to manage the outbreak and protect agricultural productivity in the district.
