Youth Sports and Arts Minister Elvis Nkandu has disclosed that a new youth internship programme aimed at reducing unemployment levels will soon be rolled out.
Mr Nkandu tells Phoenix News that although the original scheme was a joint effort between government and the United Nations system and faced challenges, including delays in disbursements, selection process among others it must continue to ensure youth readiness for the job market.
He says the ministry is now evaluating the previous programme performance in which all 2,000 youths were paid out to identify the causes of previous delays and lessons learnt will be applied to a re-designed internship model.
Mr. Nkandu emphasizes that the re-worked programme will prioritise broader placement across sectors, improved administrative safeguards, providing graduates with the work experience needed to enter the job market and practical skills among the youths to reduce the unemployment levels.
