A 5-year-old girl in Sinda District of Eastern Province has died after a pawpaw tree fell on her while playing with her friends.

The victim, Peshina Phiri, sustained serious injuries to her head and eyes, as well as a broken spine.

The incident occurred today, October 21, 2025, around 14:30 hours in Chanjobvu Compound. Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident.

Brief facts of the matter are that today, October 21, 2025, around 14:30 hours, the now deceased Peshina Phiri was playing at a neighbor’s house with her 7-year-old sister, Alice Phiri, and other children.

Mr. Mweemba said that after some time, a 27-year-old woman identified as Adnas Banda, who was sleeping inside the house, heard a loud noise of a falling tree outside in the yard.

She immediately woke up and rushed outside to see what was happening. She then saw the deceased trapped under the trunk of the pawpaw tree, with another child, Alice Phiri, also trapped under the branches, who sustained a minor cut on the leg.

The survivor, Alice Phiri, was taken to the clinic for medical attention.
