A 36-year-old businessman has been scammed out of K800 after exchanging it for a counterfeit $100 at Kapata Market in Chipata District of Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on October 21, 2025, around 21:00 hours at Kapata Market.
Brief facts of the matter are that, Andrew Jere, who runs a restaurant, was approached by Adam Mwanza, who was accompanied by two others, with a 100 US Dollar note and asked him to give him Zambian Kwacha in exchange for the dollar instead of the normal exchange rate, which should have been 100 US Dollars to about K2,500.
Mr. Mweemba says Mr. Jere paid them K800 and was given 100 US Dollars.
However, on October 22, 2025, Mr. Jere went to a currency dealer in Kapata Market to exchange the dollar for Zambian Kwacha and was told that the money was counterfeit.
He then reported the matter to the Kapata Police Post.
Police officers carried out investigations, which led to the apprehension of Adam Mwanza, aged 24, and Wanyaye Masese, aged 41, of Chalala Compound, Lusaka.
The police also recovered $800 in suspected counterfeit notes from Adam Mwanza’s house.
Meanwhile, investigations have been instituted to find the source of the counterfeit notes.
