A 51-year-old man in Chama District of Eastern Province has allegedly been murdered by unknown people as he was coming back from Independence Celebrations on suspicion of practicing witchcraft.

The deceased has been identified as Mathews Kumwenda of Mutanila Village in Chief Kambombo’s Chiefdom.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba says the incident occurred between yesterday, 24th October 2025, around 20:00hrs and today, 25th October 2025, around 03:00hrs in Chizimba village.

Brief facts of the matter are that Mathews Kumwenda, now the deceased, was coming from Chama Town Centre on a bicycle, where he had gone for Independence Day celebrations, and as he was heading home alone, unknown people attacked and murdered him.

Police Officers visited the scene and found the body of the deceased lying face downwards in a pool of blood.

Mr. Mweemba says the body was discovered with multiple deep cuts on the head, suggesting that an axe was used, and it wasn’t observed with other injuries.

The body has been deposited into Chama District Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem examination results.

A docket has since been opened.

Mr. Mweemba says no arrest has been made, and investigations have been instituted into the matter
