Unknown people have stolen a motor vehicle valued at K700,000 from Ukwimi Catholic Parish Church in Chief Sandwe’s Chiefdom in Lusangazi District of Eastern Province.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident, which occurred today, October 30, 2025, around 06:00 hours.

Brief facts of the matter are that yesterday, around 17:00 hours, Daniel Phiri, a Catholic priest at Ukwimi A Catholic Church, had parked a white Toyota Hilux Twin Cab with registration number CAA 7255 at the church premises, which is also his residence.

Mr Mweemba says this morning, Father Phiri left his house unlocked and walked to the church building about 50 meters away for prayers, leaving the vehicle parked outside. When he returned to his house around 06:30 hours, he noticed the vehicle was missing. After checking the sitting room for the car keys and realizing they were gone, he concluded that the motor vehicle had been stolen.

A search and investigation are underway, with police having launched a manhunt for the thieves.

He says no arrests have been made yet.
