The emergency response unit of the Mpika Town Council has successfully rescued a 28-year-old woman who fell into an open pit in Chitulika village.
In a statement, the Council stated the incident occurred on Thursday (30th October 2025) at approximately 17:13 hours, after which the emergency team was contacted. Rescuers arrived shortly after and pulled Ms. Prudence Mulenga from the pit in good health.

Ms. Mulenga was subsequently transported to Michael Chilufya Sata Hospital for further medical examination.
The Council praised the emergency crew in a statement, saying the crew acted swiftly and professionally to help save the life of Ms. Mulenga.
In its statement, the Local Authority reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property of the residents, as it encouraged members of the public to secure closed and properly maintain open pits, wells and opens similar to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Mpika Town Council also raised awareness to the public stressing the importance of working together as a community as it seeks to improve safety awareness and prepare the community for emergencies that may rise in an everyday context across all wards.
