Vice President Defends UPND for Load SheddingMrs. Mutale Nalumango, the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, has defended the United Party for National Development (UPND) on load shedding, saying that the UPND should not shoulder all of the blame for the ongoing load shedding and that previous governments, including UNIP, MMD, and PF, share in the power challenges now being faced.

Mrs. Nalumango indicated that the UPND government could have done better to address the energy crisis if it had taken over with a more robust base of power generation from past governments.

Mrs. Nalumango was responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Mkushi, Mr. Davies Chisopa, during the Vice President’s Question Time in Parliament Friday. Mr. Chisopa indicated that the government is inflicting hardship on the citizens by load shedding electricity, and then export electricity as well despite the PF having left 3,600 megawatts of installed generation capacity against national consumption of 2,600 megawatts.

Vice President Nalumango dismissed the claims that the government is still exporting power.
