‎Four people have died while several others sustained serious injuries, including juveniles after a Hino Ranger light truck they were traveling in hit a cow and overturned along the Choma–Namwala Road in Southern Province.‎‎

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka says the accident occurred on Friday around 17:00 hours, approximately 30 kilometers west of Choma Town.‎‎

Mr. Daka explains that the truck driven by an unknown driver who fled the scene, was carrying 35 passengers at the time of the accident stating that all passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

‎‎He says the accident happened when the driver hit a cow that was crossing the road, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which then veered off the road and overturned.‎‎

Mr. Daka has identified two of the deceased as Moono, aged 65, of Nyaleti Village under Chief Chikanta of Kalomo District, and David, also of the same village.

‎‎He says the other two deceased individuals have not yet been identified adding that the injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at Choma General Hospital and Macha Mission Hospital.

‎‎Mr. Daka adds that the truck and the cow remain at the scene as the vehicle awaits RTSA inspection and efforts are underway to identify the animal’s owner.

‎‎He states that police have launched investigations to locate the driver who fled after the accident.
