Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu has arrived in Chingola on the Copperbelt after the recent incident and says investigations into the unruly mob that disrupted President Hakainde Hichilema’s address are progressing well.

Speaking at Chingola Central Police Station on Tuesday, after visiting Chiwempala Market, Mwiimbu said 27 people have been arrested for their suspected involvement in the riot and arson.

He added that some of those arrested are accused of stealing a carpet and poles from the tent that was set up as the presidential holding room. He said investigations are ongoing and the people behind the violence will be identified and arrested.

During his visit, Mwiimbu received an apology from the marketeers through their chairperson, Christopher Chiwasha. The marketeers expressed regret that the incident happened while President Hichilema was at the market to comfort them after the fire that destroyed their stalls.
