A man from Kabwe’s Makululu Township in Central Province has died after being swept away by rainwater in an underground drainage while attempting to retrieve a phone that had fallen.

The incident occurred on November 12th, 2025, and the deceased has been identified as Cypriano Mumba.

Central Province Deputy Police Commanding Officer, Lemekani Chirwa, says the deceased met his fate while trying to recover a phone that had been dropped by a woman identified as Agness Mwale.

Chirwa explains that Mumba entered the drainage during heavy rainfall, but was swept away by a strong current through a manhole, carried about 400 meters underground, and later found trapped near the Civic Centre.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s 67-year-old mother, Esther Mutalaba, told Prime TV2 News that she only learned of her son’s death later in the day after he had left home in the morning for his usual car-washing work in town.
