THE quiet community of Mushindamo District was shaken this week after a brutal domestic incident left a woman dead and her husband facing murder charges.

Police say 39-year-old Sydney Mutwila allegedly killed his wife, 43-year-old Susan Kasasa, in the presence of their 11-year-old daughter following a violent dispute at their home.

According to Zambia Police Service deputy public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, the tragedy unfolded late in the evening when Mutwila returned home from a drinking spree and accused his wife of entertaining another man after she delayed opening the door for him.

Once inside, Mutwila allegedly launched a vicious assault on Kasasa. Their young daughter tried desperately to intervene, but the attack continued until Kasasa collapsed.

Mr Chilabi explained that Mutwila then went to bed, leaving his wife unconscious.

The following morning, their daughter awoke to hear her father crying.

When she asked what was wrong, Mutwila told her that her mother had died. The child immediately alerted neighbours, who confirmed Kasasa was unresponsive and reported the matter to the chief’s retainers, who in turn notified the police by phone call.

Mutwila fled the scene but was later apprehended by Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU) and is currently in police custody.
