A Woman, whose age is not yet known, is on the run after allegedly dumping her newborn baby in a pit latrine in Chief Mpezeni’s Chiefdom in Chipata District of Eastern Province.
According to eyewitnesses, Martha Phiri, a Malawian national, was heard screaming in her house on November 13, 2025, around 18:00 hours.
Neighbors, including her landlady, found her weak and bleeding. They prepared porridge for her, but she excused herself to go to the pit latrine and returned with blood on her body.She later disappeared.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba has confirmed the incident.
The police, assisted by the fire brigade, retrieved the baby’s body and took it to Chipata Central Hospital Mortuary.
The police have since instituted investigations into the matter.
