The Chongwe District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) has handed over 70 iron roofing sheets and assorted food items to four families whose houses collapsed in Mwanshelela village of Senior Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamaambo II following heavy rains on November 16th, 2025.
The roofing sheets, which cost K34,000, were purchased through the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) disaster component by Chongwe Municipal Council, while 4 50-kilogram bags of rice were also given to the families by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chongwe District Administrative Officer Evaristo Kayaya stated that the items are meant to cushion the affected families from the challenges they are facing since their houses collapsed.
ZANIS reports that Mr Kayaya said it is the government’s duty to take care of the welfare of people in the country who are affected by disasters through the CDF disaster component and other means.
“When the disaster occurred, we responded quickly because the government is mandated to take care of people who are affected by disasters. As a committee, we promised you that we would provide you with the necessary assistance and true to our word, we have delivered these items which we purchased through CDF,” Mr Kayaya said.
One of the beneficiaries, Edwin Mubamba thanked the government for providing the roofing sheets to the affected families.
