Lightning Strike K!lls 25 year old Malawian Visitor in Eastern Zambia A 25-year-old Malawian businessman died on Sunday afternoon after being struck by lightning in Njenjema Village of Chief Phikamalaza in Chasefu District.
Zambia Police Eastern Province Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba revealed to TV Yatu in a statement that the incident occurred around 14:30 hours on 8 December 2025 and was reported 15 minutes later by Group Headman Mutapila of Mutapila Village.
Police officers rushed to the scene where they found the victim lying face-down on the ground with severe burns on his chest and back and he was bleeding from the mouth, nose, and ears whom they pronounced dead at the scene.
An eyewitness, Sarah Mhlanga of Njenjema Village, told police she was returning from her maize field as rains started when she saw a sudden blue flash of lightning followed by a loud bang. About 300 metres ahead of her, she saw a man fall instantly to the ground. She ran to assist and found the unknown male lying motionless before alerting the local headman, who then informed police.
Authorities have since identified the deceased as Yamikani Mwale, a Malawian national and businessman from Chimanga Village in Chief Kachele of Dowa District. Mwale reportedly travelled frequently to Zambia to buy used plastic materials for resale.
Police say the body has been deposited in the Lundazi District Hospital mortuary. Relatives have been advised to follow formal procedures to repatriate the remains to Malawi.
Police have described the incident as a case of sudden and unnatural death resulting from a lightning strike TV Yatu has learned.
