Dar es Salaam, December 9, 2025 – The United Republic of Tanzania has cancelled all official Independence Day celebrations today, citing security concerns and the need to redirect funds to urgent national priorities.
The government announced that resources initially earmarked for parades, ceremonies, and banquets will instead be used to repair infrastructure damaged during post-election unrest following the October 2025 general elections.
Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, speaking on behalf of the government, also urged citizens — especially non-essential workers — to stay home and mark the day privately, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public safety. The Ministry of Home Affairs warned that any planned demonstrations would be considered unlawful, as authorities move to prevent potential unrest.
The decision comes in the context of heightened political tensions, with some groups reportedly planning to use the national holiday to stage protests. Several opposition supporters and activists were reportedly detained ahead of the day, highlighting the government’s efforts to maintain stability.
Despite the cancellation of official festivities, Tanzanians continue to commemorate the historic day quietly, reflecting on the nation’s journey since gaining independence on December 9, 1961.
