A NOTORIOUS ivory poacher, who was on the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW)’s wanted list for two years, was finally apprehended at the court premises.
Chiliba Chiliba, 52, was nabbed at Lusaka Magistrates Court, where he was attending trial of another ivory-trafficking suspect, Alumba Luhale.
After he was arrested last month on November 6, Livingstone High Court confirmed a five- year jail term earlier imposed on Chiliba in 2023, before he fled.
On November 23, 2023, Livingstone High Court Judge Bridget Maka overturned the acquittal of Chiliba and others, by a magistrate, for illegal possession of 33 elephant ivory pieces weighing 241 kilogrammes.
Chiliba and his co accused were convicted on charges of unlawful possession of a prescribed trophy.
She imposed a five year jail term on the convicts but soon after the conviction, the offenders absconded from serving the five-year prison term, prompting a nation-wide search.
DNPW said in a statement that Chiliba was transferred to Livingstone Correctional Service, where he is serving the jail term.
