The National Assembly has taken a decisive step in reshaping Zambia’s constitutional landscape after the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Bill No. 7 of 2025 sailed through its second reading.

‎‎In a vote that underscored the intensity of the moment, 131 Members of Parliament voted in favour, while only two opposed the Bill, and none abstained.‎‎

The outcome followed a charged debate on the floor of the House, marked by sharp legal arguments, political tension and deep divisions over the proposed amendments.

‎‎Supporters hailed the Bill as a necessary reform aimed at strengthening representation and governance, while critics warned of far-reaching consequences and questioned the process leading to the vote.

‎‎With the second reading now passed, Bill No. 7 advances to the next stage of parliamentary scrutiny, bringing Zambia a step closer to possible constitutional change.‎‎

As the nation watches closely, attention now shifts to what lies ahead in the remaining stages of the legislative process and how the final outcome may shape the country’s democratic future.
