Mongu Municipal Council (MMC) has identified and secured land for the installation of solar power plants aimed at improving electricity supply in the district.‎‎

The project, which will benefit both constituencies in Mongu, will be implemented in Kaande Ward, where the local authority, in collaboration with ZESCO, has secured eight hectares of land for the development.‎‎

According to MMC Public Relations Manager Abigail Sitenge, the initiative is in line with a Presidential directive under the Constituency Energy Initiative, which seeks to enhance power supply across the country.

‎‎The identified land is located approximately 15 metres from an existing 11 kilovolt overhead power line, making it suitable for the installation of the solar facilities.‎‎

Sitenge says four megawatts of solar power, with two megawatts allocated to each constituency, will be installed starting January 2026.

‎‎Once operational, the solar plants are expected to significantly reduce load shedding, lower electricity bills, and improve energy security by easing pressure on the national power grid.‎‎

The Council notes that the solar plants will generate power during the day, thereby reducing reliance on hydroelectric power stations, a move that aligns with government efforts to address power deficits caused by climate-induced droughts.‎‎

During a press briefing held in November, President Hakainde Hichilema announced government plans to establish solar power plants in every constituency to improve access to electricity nationwide.

‎‎Meanwhile, the council says the project is expected to create employment opportunities for youths in Mongu during both the installation and operational phases.
