A 34-year-old man has been arrested in Choma after the Toyota Sprinter vehicle he was driving was found with ZESCO cables on the back passenger seats and in the boot, suspected to have been stolen.

Meanwhile, two other suspects on board the same vehicle fled the scene upon noticing police presence.

In the early hours of 17th December, 2025, around 05:00 hours, police officers from Choma Central Police Station were conducting motorised night patrols.

While in the Kozo area, the stated vehicle was intercepted and as officers approached, two unidentified persons fled into nearby bush, leaving the driver, Bedford Siakeeka, of Kachacha Compound in Choma.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, says a search of the vehicle yielded ZESCO cables, with the suspect claiming he had been hired by the two fleeing individuals to transport the cables from Kalomo to Choma.

Namalongo states that the vehicle has been impounded, while the driver is in police custody for possession of property believed to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

He notes that the ZESCO Security Department was engaged to verify the recovered property, with the cables positively identified as four armoured core cables measuring 185 mm, stay wires, and service wires, with the value yet to be established at broadcast.
