A 14-Year-Old Boy in Chama District of Eastern Province has died following a road traffic accident involving a tractor and a bicycle.

The deceased has been identified as Peter Kachali of Mundalanga Village, Chief Tembwe.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred today, Thursday, 25th December 2025, around 08:30 hours at the Farmers Training Centre (FTC) area along Mandalanga Road, about two kilometres south of Chama town.

Involved was an unregistered tractor which was being driven from west to east by Malama Nyirenda, aged 32, of Farmers Training Centre (FTC) Compound in Chama District. The driver escaped unhurt.

Also involved was an Atlas bicycle, which was being ridden from east to west by Peter Kachali, now deceased. The boy sustained serious head injuries.

Mr. Mweemba said the boy was rushed to Chama District Hospital, where he was admitted but later died from his injuries.

His body has since been deposited at Chama District Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem examination.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred after the tractor driver allegedly drove while under the influence of alcohol and hit the cyclist who was approaching from the opposite direction, causing the boy to fall in the middle of the road.

Police have since arrested the driver, while both the tractor and the bicycle have been impounded and are parked at Chama Police Station pending examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA).

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
