PRESS STATEMENT2025 CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT STATISTICS

December 26, 2025 – The Zambia Police Service wishes to inform the public that between December 24, 2025, at 18:00 hours and December 26, 2025, at 06:00 hours, a total of 224 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide.

The accidents included 23 fatal accidents, which resulted in 28 deaths. There were also 31 serious accidents, leaving 64 people seriously injured, and 58 slight accidents, which caused 94 minor injuries. In addition, 112 accidents involved damage only.

Overall, 186 casualties were recorded during this period.Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of accidents with 80 cases, followed by Copperbelt Province with 46 cases.

Other provinces recorded accidents as follows: Central (19), Eastern (17), Southern (16), North-Western (11), Luapula (10), Muchinga (10), Northern (8), and Western (7).

Most accidents were caused by human error. Excessive speed was the leading cause, accounting for 80 cases, followed by failure to keep to the nearside, cutting in, and improper overtaking.

During the same period, 902 road traffic offences were recorded, and ZMW 390,440.00 was collected in admission of guilt fines.

Compared to the 2024 Christmas holiday, which recorded 123 accidents over four days, this year’s two-day period recorded a significantly higher number of accidents.

The Zambia Police Service has noted this increase with concern and will intensify traffic enforcement, speed control, and both motorised and foot patrols during the New Year’s holiday to improve road safety.

The Service will continue conducting day and night patrols to ensure a peaceful and crime-free festive season. Members of the public are urged to remain law-abiding as they prepare to usher in 2026.

The Zambia Police Service also commends the public for celebrating the Christmas festivities in a calm and orderly manner.
