A five-year-old boy has drowned after falling into an unfinished soaker way while running away from traditional dancers known as ‘Nyau’ in Katete District of Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred today, 1st January 2026, around 11:20 hours in Chigaga Area.
Brief facts are that Joshua Mbewe now the deceased was playing along the road with friends.
Mr. Mweemba says when traditional dancers locally known as Nyau approached the area, the children panicked and ran in different directions.
He says in the process, Joshua fell into an uncovered and unfinished soaker way at an unoccupied house, about 12 metres from the road.
Mr. Mweemba says police rushed to the scene and found the body already retrieved by members of the public.
The body has since been deposited into St.Francis Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting Postmortem Examination results and burial.
