Socialist Party (SP) Zambia President Dr Fred M’membe has strongly condemned the United States’ military strikes on Venezuela and the disappearance of that country’s President.

Dr M’membe described the actions as a flagrant violation of international law and an assault on Venezuelan sovereignty.

He stated that the attacks, launched in the early hours of 3rd January 2026, targeted both military installations and civilian areas in and around Caracas, as well as the neighbouring states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira.

Dr M’membe said the Socialist Party views the strikes as a direct breach of Article 2 of the United Nations Charter.

The SP president explained that the Charter prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

He further labelled the aggression a war crime under international law.

The SP president warned that the disappearance of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores following the attacks marks a dangerous escalation.

Dr M’membe observed that while the Trump administration claims to have captured the Venezuelan leaders, the lack of proof of life raises serious concerns about the legality and morality of the operation.

He accused the United States of waging war on Venezuela for control of its oil resources.

The SP president argued that Washington cannot tolerate a government that prioritises the welfare of its people over the interests of multinational corporations.

Dr M’membe added that the Socialist Party stands in solidarity with the people of Venezuela.

He urged progressive governments and peace-loving citizens around the world to condemn the attacks.

The SP president emphasised that they should also demand an immediate end to hostilities and support Venezuela’s right to self-determination.

Dr M’membe affirmed that the era of unchecked imperialist aggression is coming to an end.

He stated that the people of the Global South are rising to defend their sovereignty and justice.
