A 25-year-old man is fighting for his life after sustaining serious injuries in a road traffic accident involving an ox-cart and a truck in Petauke District.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the accident, stating that it occurred on 6th January 2026, around 06:00 hours near Kaluba Village Bridge in Chief Mumbi’s area, along the Great East Road.

Mr. Mweemba says the accident involved an ox-cart being pulled by two oxen, traveling from west to east.He says the ox-cart was carrying one passenger, identified as Richard Zimba, who sustained deep cuts to the right leg and head, and was bleeding from the nose.

Mr. Mweemba says Mr Zimba became unconscious and was rushed to Kalindawalo General Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.Also involved was a Volvo FH12 truck with trailer registration numbers AJF 3023 ZM and AAD 4488 T, driven by Joseph Daka, aged 36, of Kaumbwe Village in Chief Mwanjawantu’s area, who was also traveling from west to east.Preliminary investigations indicate that the oxen suddenly ran onto the road after being distracted by the sound of other vehicles, leading to the collision.The two oxen died on the spot after being hit by the truck.He says the investigations into the matter have been instituted.Ends.
