A ONE-YEAR-OLD child of Lusaka’s Chibolya has died of injuries sustained after being hit by a piece of metal from a television antenna, which her father was using to whip his wife.
The fatal injury on the baby, who was at the time strapped on the mother’s back, happened on New Year’s Day.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the suspected murder case was initially reported as unlawful wounding.
“Police in Lusaka have detained a 43-year-old man for allegedly causing the death of his one-year-old child, in a case that initially began as unlawful wounding in Chibolya Compound.”
Mr Chilabi said on New Year’s Day around 15:00 hours, Justina Chabala, 33, of Chibolya Township, reported to police that her daughter had been injured by her husband, Evans Chabala, 43.
He said claims are that on that material day around 15:00 hours, the couple quarrelled while at home.
During the altercation, Mr Chabala allegedly picked a television antenna to strike his wife, but in the process an aluminium bar from the antenna hit the baby, who was strapped to her mother’s back.
The child sustained a deep head wound and died at the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH) the following day.
