A one-day-old baby girl who was allegedly deserted by her mother in Chief Nzamane’s Chiefdom in Kasenengwa District has died.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident.
Mr. Mweemba said a 38-year-old man, Goodson Soko, reported that a newborn baby girl had been abandoned by an unknown woman.
He said the baby was admitted to Chipata Central Hospital, where she later died in the early hours of Thursday, 8th January 2026, at around 01:00 hours.
The body has since been deposited in the hospital mortuary, pending a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Police have since instituted investigations into the matter.
