The mortal remains of a Zambian peacekeeper who died while serving in the Central African Republic (CAR)arrived in the country last night. The plane carrying the late Staff Sergeant Alick Banda touched down at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka at 21:05 hours and was received by Zambia Army Brigadier General Louis Chikoti.

Staff Sergeant Banda of the Zambia Army died on December 29, 2025, after a short illness while deployed with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

“Staff Sergeant Banda made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the cause of peace. His dedication to duty reflected the highest traditions of the Zambia Defence Force and brought honour to our nation,” said Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu in a statement.

Meanwhile, Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele described the loss of the soldier as devastating, noting that his death occurred in the line of duty while pursuing peace.“No Commander remains unmoved by the death of his soldier, especially when he dies in pursuit of peace.

On behalf of the Zambia Army, I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Staff Sergeant Banda. We share in your grief and stand with you during this difficult time,” Lt Gen Zyeele said.

He conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, noting that the late Staff Sergeant’s service reflected the courage and commitment of Zambian men and women in uniform serving both at home and abroad.
