A 38-year-old man in Katete District has been detained for allegedly raping his 18-year-old stepdaughter and attempting to silence her with a promise of money.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, which happened in Luangwa Section.
Brief facts of the matter are that the victim had gone to sleep earlier that evening when her stepfather returned home around 20:00 hours.
He reportedly knocked on the door, which the girl opened before returning to her bedroom, believing she was safe in her own home.
Mr. Mweemba says that later that night, around 23:00 hours, the suspect allegedly entered the victim’s bedroom and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.
He says when the victim attempted to shout for help, the suspect allegedly covered her mouth to stop her from calling out.
After the act, the suspect allegedly warned the victim not to inform her mother, who was away at the farm at the time.
He further allegedly promised to give the girl money in exchange for her silence, telling her not to report the matter to anyone.
Despite the fear, shock, and trauma she experienced, the victim reported the incident to the police the following morning.
Police issued the victim with a medical report form to facilitate a medical examination.
The suspect has since been detained to assist with ongoing investigations.
