A 15-year-old female footballer, ANNITA CHOMBA, has tragically died during a Zambia Premier League National Division women’s match at Godfrey “Ucar” Chitalu Stadium today.
The incident occurred between 10:48 and 12:30 hours, during a match between Kabwe Warriors Women Football Club and Locus Queens Football Club of Lusaka.
The case was reported to Chowa Police Station at 13:20 hours by Football Association of Zambia Match Commissioner ALFRED BANDA.Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer GODFREY CHILABI, says CHOMBA, the reserve goalkeeper for Locus Queens, was not playing at the time but had gone to celebrate a goal with her teammates.
CHILABI says when play resumed; CHOMBA remained on the ground and appeared unresponsive, prompting the referee to call the on-site medical team.
He says she was rushed to the nearby Railway Surgery Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
CHOMBA’s body has been taken to the Kabwe Central Hospital mortuary, pending a postmortem examination.
In a statement to ZNBC news, CHILABI said investigations are ongoing, and an inquiry file has been opened to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
