A 14-year-old boy of Jilayantenga village in Chadiza district of Eastern province was yesterday mauled to d£ath by a huge crocodile in Nsadzu river.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Limpo Liywalii has confirmed the unfortunate death of the boy in a statement made available to ZANIS in Chadiza today.

Mr. Liywalii identified the deceased as Smart Banda of Jilayantenga village in Chief Mlolo’s area.

The Eastern Police Commissioner said the boy was caught by the reptile in the company of his friends who had gone to drink water from the Nsadzu river.

Mr. Liywalii said the physical check of the body revealed that it had multiple wounds on the face and a fractured right arm caused by the crocodile attack.

And an eye witness, Bernard Banda, their friend was caught dragged into the water by a crocodile.

It was at this point that they rushed to inform the parents about the incident.

The Police were immediately notified and later a team of Police and Fire brigade officers was mounted which rushed to the scene.

The body of the boy was retrieved at around 17:30 hours. The body of the boy will be buried today.

Nsadzu river is highly infested with crocodiles but many local people have been disregarding the presence of reptiles in the river.
