A 13-year-old girl from Kantanshi Township in Mufulira District was sh0t in the leg by police during a chase for a suspected criminal.
The incident occurred around 09:00 hours in Section 5 of Kantanshi Township.
According to eyewitnesses, police brought in a suspect to identify his alleged accomplices in the area. During the operation, the suspect attempted to escape, prompting officers to open fire. One of the bullets struck the young girl.
Her sister identified her as Bukata Bunda.
Bukata initially received treatment at Ronald Ross Hospital before being transferred to Kitwe Central Hospital for further medical care.
Meanwhile, residents of Kantanshi have condemned the police’s use of live ammunition in a public area, expressing concerns over public safety.
Police are yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident.
