A 13-year-old girl from Kantanshi Township in Mufulira District, Bukata Bunda, has undergone a leg amputation at Arthur Davison Children’s Hospital in Ndola after being accidentally shot by police.
The incident occurred on February 22, 2025, when Bukata was struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by police officers in pursuit of a suspect who had escaped from a police vehicle in Kantanshi’s Section 5.
Her father, Clifford Kunda, confirmed the amputation to Diamond News, stating that doctors determined it was the only viable option to save her life.
He added that Bukata is expected to remain hospitalized for three more weeks as she recovers.
Meanwhile, Kantanshi Member of Parliament Anthony Mumba has expressed deep sadness over the ordeal, stressing the need for thorough medical assessments before resorting to amputation.
He also assured the family that he would advocate for full compensation and government support for Bukata.
Despite growing concern over the incident, police have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
