Justice Minister Princess Kasune has dispelled speculations that government intends to amend the Constitution to extend the presidential tenure or alter the 50+1 threshold for electing a president.
Speaking on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview last night, Ms. Kasune clarified that the constitutional amendments under consideration are based on concerns raised by Zambians over time.
“It is important to underscore that this is not the first time this conversation is happening. As a government, we have taken it upon ourselves to look into some of the provisions people have always raised,” she said.
She further emphasized that there is no draft bill yet, as the government is still in the process of identifying provisions that will inform the draft.
“There is no draft bill yet. We are only working on provisions that will inform the draft bill,” she stated.
Ms. Kasune assured that once the draft is ready, it will be subjected to thorough scrutiny by stakeholders to ensure it aligns with the country’s governance needs.
