The Zambia Air Force Commander, Lt Gen Oscar Msitu Alfred Nyoni, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of Esnart Hachintu Moonga, who passed away on March 30, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the ZAF Commander on April 1, 2025, in Siamikobo Village, Chikankata District, the Chief of Medical Services, Brig Gen Simon Tembo, said ZAF was deeply saddened by Moonga’s passing, as she had become part of the Air Force family.

“Our encounter with Moonga was under unfortunate circumstances when one of our helicopters damaged her house during a routine operation. In response, ZAF built her a new home and endeavored to improve her quality of life. We are saddened that, just six months later, we have lost her, but we take comfort in knowing that we touched her life and made a difference,” Brig Gen Tembo said.

He added that the ZAF Commander felt compelled to ease the family’s burden by providing a coffin, food, and logistical support during the funeral.

Brig Gen Tembo also noted that God had remembered Ms. Moonga in her old age, granting her comfort and happiness in her final days.

Meanwhile, Moonga’s only surviving daughter, Joyce Mukuna, expressed profound gratitude to ZAF and the Government for their support before and after her mother’s passing.

She reflected on the ZAF helicopter accident that damaged her mother’s house on September 7, 2024, saying it was not a tragedy but a blessing in disguise. As a result, her mother received a modern home, solar power, a wheelchair, and other essential household items.

“Even though she only lived in the house for six months, my mother seemed happier and more comfortable,” Ms. Mukuna said.

She added that Moonga never complained of any pain or illness but gradually grew weaker over the past few weeks until she passed away peacefully due to old age.

Ms. Moonga is survived by 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Of her four children, only one Joyce Mukuna remains.

What began as a disaster between ZAF and 96-year-old Esnart Hachintu Moonga turned into an unexpected blessing, fostering a bond that has now come to a sorrowful end.
