A 22-Year-Old Man in Katete District, Eastern Province, has allegedly murdéred his 18-year-old girlfriend before taking his own life under unclear circumstances.
The bodies of Grace Banda and her boyfriend, Kelvin Sakala, were discovered at the boyfriend’s house in Zililakasu Village, under Chief Kawaza, this morning.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred between August 15, 2025, around 18:00 hours, and August 16, 2025, around 04:00 hours.
The brief facts are that Grace Banda left her home yesterday at around 18:00 hours without informing anyone of her whereabouts and did not return.
Mr. Mweemba says this morning, around 04:00 hours, Jairos Sakala, 25, went to wake up his cousin Kelvin Sakala in the next village to help him look for cattle that had escaped from his kraal.
He says that after several knocks on the door went unanswered, Jairos pushed the door open and found Kelvin hanging from the roof using a mosquito net in his sitting room.
The police commissioner said other relatives were informed, and upon entering the house, they discovered Grace Banda’s lifeless body in the bedroom with strangulation marks on her neck.
The body has been deposited into St. Francis Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examination results.
It is believed that Kelvin Sakala murdéred his girlfriend and then took his own life for unknown reasons.
Kelvin Sakala’s relatives have been advised to proceed with burial arrangements as no foul play is suspected.
