The police, in collaboration with the fire brigade, have saved the life of a 21-year-old man in Katete District of Eastern Province, who is allegedly of unsound mind and had attempted to commit suicide by climbing a telecommunications tower.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident and identified the victim as Tyson Banda of Ibex Compound.

Brief facts of the matter are that around 06:00 hours today, 12 September 2025, Lungton Banda, the brother of the victim, was at his shop at Katete Stores when he saw someone on top of the telecommunications tower at Omelo Mumba Primary School with a crowd of people who had come to see what was happening.

Mr. Mweemba says that when Mr. Banda went to check, he discovered that it was his brother Tyson.

He says that after interviewing the victim, he could not reveal the motive behind his actions.

Mr. Mweemba says that the father, Mr. Gibson Banda, aged 56, revealed that his son Tyson is of unsound mind and was receiving treatment from St. Francis Hospital.

He says the victim has been handed over to his father.
