A 1-Year-and-5-month-old male juvenile has drowned in a bucket of water in Chief Zumwanda’s Chiefdom of Lumezi District in the Eastern Province.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on 21 September 2025 between 12:00 hours and 12:30 hours in Wayenga Village.

Brief facts of the matter are that Blessings Zimba, now deceased, was sleeping in the sitting room while his father, Teddy Zimba, aged 20, was also resting in the bedroom, and the mother of the deceased, Lydia Chirwa, aged 18, was cooking outside the house.

Mr. Mweemba says after the mother finished cooking, she decided to go inside the house to save the food and discovered that the child had drowned in a 20-litre bucket of water, facing an upside-down position.

Mr. Mweemba says the mother quickly removed him, and unfortunately, he was already dead.

The neighbours heard the cries and rushed to try and resuscitate the child. It was too late, the boy was already dead.

He says police officers rushed to the scene, inspected the body, and found no signs of suspected foul play.

The body has since been deposited into Lumezi District Hospital awaiting postmortem examination results.
