A mother and her two children have died, while their father has been left with serious burns, after the house they were in caught fire due to a suspected electrical fault in Chief Chikuwe’s chiefdom in Chipangali District.

The deceased have been identified as Aliness Nyirenda, 27, and her children, Cecilia Ngondo, 1, and George Ngondo, 5.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred yesterday, 21 September 2025, around 22:40 hours in the Giveaway area.

Mr. Mweemba says the husband, James Ngondo, 42, sustained serious burns and was rushed to Muzeyi Mission Hospital, where he was referred to Chipata Central Hospital.

Brief facts of the matter are that on 21 September 2025, around 22:40 hours, a neighbour of the victims, Miles Daka, 28, heard a loud bang at the victims’ house with people shouting for help, only to find that the house was on fire.

Mr. Mweemba says Mr. Daka rushed there, forced the door open, and started pouring water with the help of others until the fire was put out.

He says when the fire was extinguished, three bodies were found in the living room, with the surviving husband lying in the kitchen.

Mr. Mweemba says police visited the scene and found the three bodies lifeless.

The three bodies have been deposited into Chipata Central Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

Mr. Mweemba says an inquiry has been opened.
