A 29-YEAR-OLD police officer of Livingstone has been arrested for allegedly obtaining over K17,000 by false pretences from unsuspecting members of the public.

Constable Imangolwa Chibunda, of Livingstone Central Police Station, allegedly claimed to possess significant influence and promised to secure employment opportunities for the victims or facilitate the release of detained suspects.

Southern Province police commanding officer Auxensio Daka said between March and October 1 this year, Livingstone Central Police Station received a series of reports from the public alleging that they were swindled by the suspect, a police officer at the same station.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the officer was in the habit of deceiving unsuspecting individuals, both while on duty and outside his workplace, by falsely claiming to possess significant influence,” Mr Daka said.

He said the officer made promises to the victims in exchange for money.

Mr Daka said so far, complaints have been received from Emeldah Mutema, who paid K11,500, Simon Zulu (K1,500), Euphenia Sipunu (K2,000), Joselyn Habeenzu (K360), John Kazala (K250) and Eunice Grende (K1,800).
