The Governance Elections Advocacy Research Services (GEARS) has urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to consider extending the voter registration exercise.
GEARS Initiative Zambia Board Chairperson, Lackson Lungu, stated that the commission’s recent update on November 5, 2025, of over 1.2 million registered voters falls short of the over 3 million target set by the commission.
Mr. Lungu emphasized the need for the commission to extend the voter registration exercise to enable those who have not registered to do so.
The mass voter registration exercise, which began on October 13, is set to conclude tomorrow, November 11, 2025.
Meanwhile, as of October 31, 2025, the commission had registered over 1.2 million voters since the beginning of the exercise.
During the update, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Brown Kasaro, stated that the Commission was closely monitoring the exercise and appropriate decisions would be made to determine any extension.
He said the commission had dispatched monitoring teams across the country to collect information and have an onsite reality check on the reported challenges, which will help the Commission to make an informed decision.
