The community of Mataya Village in Chief Kalindawalo’s area is reeling in shock after two 10-year-old boys drowned in Chaluhombo Stream on 17 November 2025. What began as a casual afternoon swim for four children turned into a heartbreaking tragedy, raising renewed concerns over child safety around local water bodies.

The victims, Takunda Njobvu and Joseph Phiri, reportedly moved into a deeper section of the stream while their younger companions aged nine and eight remained near the shallows. When the boys began struggling, one of the juveniles ran home to alert adults, but help arrived too late.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, explaining that Police and Fire Brigade officers found the bodies already retrieved by community members. A physical examination revealed no injuries, indicating that drowning was the sole cause of death.

The tragedy has sparked discussions in Mataya Village about the need for increased supervision and safety education for children, especially during the rainy season when streams become more dangerous.

The bodies have been taken to Petauke District Hospital mortuary pending postmortem and burial.
