From Concerned Citizens
As the year comes to an end, we, the concerned citizens and health workers of Zambia, feel compelled to raise our collective voice and remind the government of its commitment to recruit health workers. It has become increasingly evident that the recruitment process is not progressing as promised, despite the urgent need to strengthen our healthcare system.
For months, citizens have been assured that the government would address the shortage of health personnel. Yet, to date, there is no clear roadmap, no published timeline, and no transparent communication regarding the recruitment process. This uncertainty has left thousands of qualified health workers unemployed and health facilities across the country overstretched.
We therefore urge the government to take immediate and decisive action. Specifically, we request:
1. A clear roadmap outlining the recruitment plan for the remainder of the year;
2. A published timeline for each step of the recruitment process;
3. A confirmed number of health workers to be recruited.
The impact of these delays is being felt in every part of Zambia. Clinics and hospitals are struggling to meet rising patient numbers, and communities are feeling the strain. Continued inaction threatens the quality and accessibility of healthcare services — something no nation can afford.
The people of Zambia are watching, and we are prepared to hold our leaders accountable. We simply ask the government to honour the promises it made and prioritize the health sector as pledged. A strong healthcare system begins with adequate staffing, and that requires urgent recruitment.
We also invite all stakeholders — civil society organizations, the private sector, cooperating partners, and fellow citizens — to stand with us in calling for meaningful action to address the health worker shortage in Zambia.
We now await the government’s response and tangible steps forward.
