A one-month-old baby boy has been abandoned by his mother, who claimed to be looking for a job at a named private school, in Chipata District of Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on Tuesday, 23rd December 2025, around 09:30 hours.
Mr Mweemba said that Pearson Mbuzi aged 27, who reported the matter to the police, stated that a woman known only identified as Fridah approached him and another man, Charles Ngoma, within a named Private School’s premises claiming that she was looking for work. She was asked to wait.
In the process, the woman allegedly abandoned the baby within the school premises and left a letter beside him bearing the name “Friday.”
The child was rushed to Chipata Central Hospital for a medical examination, where medical personnel confirmed that he is in a stable condition.
Social welfare officers were notified and are handling the child’s welfare, while police have launched investigations to trace the mother.
Mr Mweemba said no arrests have been made so far.
