LIFT the ban on night public transport operations to save business, plead inter-city bus operators.

And former Livingstone district commissioner Paul Sensele says government is losing millions from the continued non-operation of the Livingstone Inter-City Bus Terminus.

In an interview at the COMESA makeshift bus station, several bus operators who spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not permitted to give media interviews by their bus companies, asked for an in-depth analysis of the ban’s achievements.

“As far as we are concerned, road traffic accidents still occur despite the ban. There needs to be proof of [road traffic accident] RTA incidences as a result of night travel. We are currently making losses because our buses usually depart Livingstone with less than normal operational capacity of passengers,” one operator said.

Another said: “The other reason for our request to the UPND government to lift the night travel ban is that passengers who have deadlines to beat opt to use Toyota Wish taxis that operate between Livingstone and other towns up to Lusaka after 22:00 hours. This makes our business operations very difficult with the current economic crisis which we know is a global one. So, please President Hakainde Hichilema, consider lifting the ban; it was and still is not a business development decision.”

Another asked government to: “Provide detailed graphical details of reduced RTAs as a result of banning night travel, against accidents that happened before the ban was enforced.”

And Sensele agreed with the operators while enforcing it for truck drivers.

“Our brothers, truck drivers, get so fatigued and stressed with long distances that they have to cover. And so, to help reduce accidents it is better to force them to rest by not travelling at night. But let’s allow the passenger transporters to operate in the night for economic reasons,” said Sensele. “I would also like to add that the delay to complete the ultramodern bus station whose construction commenced sometime in 2012 until 2021 by PF was a joke and a waste of millions of tax payer’s funds. But we should ensure that the bottlenecks that exist between the council and NAPSA who eventually completed the station should be resolved as government is currently losing millions of funds, as the bus operators have refused to move from COMESA to the station because of stringent conditions which they are not agreeable to.”
