A 7-year-old girl has died, while her 10-year-old sister sustained serious injuries after their grass-thatched house collapsed in Lumezi District of Eastern Province.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred today, 31st December 2025, around 03:00 hours at Tabale Farm in the Mulandabatu area.

Brief facts are that, on 30th December 2025, the mother, Misozi Lungu and her husband, James Phiri slept in one room with their five-year-old son, while the two daughters slept in another room.

At around 03:00 hours today, the mother heard strange noises and woke her husband, only to discover that part of the house had collapsed on their daughters.

Mr. Mweemba said the parents tried to rescue the children and called for help, but Mary Phiri died at the scene. Her sister, Liviness Phiri, suffered serious injuries to her legs, chest, head, and other parts of her body.

The body of the deceased has been deposited into Lumezi District Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination, while Liviness remains hospitalized in critical condition with a swollen stomach.

In a telephone interview, the deceased’s aunt, Milika Phiri, disclosed that the house is believed to have weakened due to the heavy rains experienced in the area.
