A 35-year-old man of Dungulungu Village in Chief Kambombo’s Chiefdom of Chama District in Eastern Province has drowned after going out to drink beer and later attempting to cross the flooded Mpalausenga River.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred between Thursday, 1st January 2026 at around 20:00 hours and Friday, 2nd January 2026 at around 07:00 hours.

Brief facts are that on Thursday evening at around 20:00 hours, Luomba Zgambo, now the deceased had been drinking beer at his home. When the beer finished, he informed his mother that he was going out to drink more beer.

Mr. Mweemba said the mother warned him not to cross the Mpalausenga River as it was flooded, but he assured her that he would not cross if the river was flooded before leaving.

He did not return home, prompting relatives to inquire at the place he was said to have gone drinking. They were informed that he never reached the location.

Mr. Mweemba said a search was later conducted along the Mpalausenga River, and at around 07:00 hours today, his body was discovered stuck in water reeds by his uncle, Peter Mulenje.

The body was retrieved, no foul play was suspected, and the family has since been advised to bury the deceased.
