Five women who had gone to collect mushrooms in the bush of Buyantanshi Village in Muchinga Ward, about five (5) kilometres off the Kasama Road in Mporokoso District, made a tragic discovery after finding the body of a young man hanging from a tree between 06 and 07:00 hours on Saturday.
One of the women, Ms. Purity Bwalya, a resident of Chandalala village , together with her companions, immediately rushed to Mporokoso Police Station to report the matter. The Police later engaged Mporokoso Town Council through the Public Health Officer, Mrs. Sandra C. Mushibwe, and the Division Fire Officer, Mr. Davis D. Sinyangwe. A joint team retrieved the body and deposited it at Mporokoso District Mortuary.
The deceased was later identified by his mother, Ms. Mary Mpundu Mulungu, of Chanda Mali Village in Mikomba Ward, as her 26-year-old son, Mr. Steven Mtonga. She stated that the deceased left home on Thursday, 1st January 2026, at around 18:30 hours, and that the family had been searching for him since.According to a relative, the deceased appeared slightly intoxicated and mentioned hearing voices before he ran away and never returned.
The body of the deceased is currently lying at Mporokoso District Mortuary, awaiting burial.
