The Ndola High Court has heard how small-scale miner Samuel Makonde, popularly known as Shi Mumbi, allegedly hit his rival with a shovel which resulted in his death.

According to Zambia Daily Mail, Makonde, 41, is facing a murder charge following the death of Edward Chewe after a wrangle during mining activities at Baluba Mine in Luanshya in July 2020.

Chewe is said to have died three days after being hit with a shovel by Makonde. When the matter came up for his defence in Ndola on Friday, Makonde denied murdering Chewe, saying he was in Kitwe on the day of the incident.

This was contradicted by his business partner, who said Makonde was around. In his defence, Makonde opted to call his wife, Faith Kapungu, a police officer, to defend him.

Ms Kapungu, who is based at Luanshya Central Police under the crack squad, gave an account of how she learnt about the wrangles.
