According to statistics, the lead cause of road traffic accidents in Zambia is excessive speed. Many experts who take time to look at the statistics will agree with us that pedestrians are the most vulnerable victims.
We tell people that we are very serious about reducing the number of RTAs, however, section 27 of the road traffic amendment Act doesn’t seem to be interested in this fight or maybe most of the people who sat to look at this section have VXs and they don’t in anyway want to be inconvenienced. After all, fatal is payable, a rich person to part away with ten thousand kwacha for the life of a pedestrian is nothing.
The Highway code says, drive at a speed you can control just in case of anything. Speed limits have been increased, coined in a smart language of tolerance percentages, on poor roads, poor signages. Just yesterday, we saw a video of a driver of a Toyota Hilux who lost control and killed people by the road side market. We are also still dealing with ‘ma cakes’ problems but the law maker said “the speed is too low, can we increase”.
Pedestrians won’t enact law, they don’t matter. You cross the road I kill you.
